YaprakSarma — Wrapped vine leaves with a filling of rice, onion and spices like mint, currant, pepper and cinnamon.
Dolma — Vegetables either fresh or dried eggplants, peppers, tomatoes or zucchinis are stuffed with a mixture of rice and onion with various spices.
TazeFasulye — Green beans cooked with tomato and/or tomato paste and of course onion.
Karnıyarık— Fried eggplants with a minced meat, onion, parsley, garlic and tomato filling. This dish is a must. To make sure that what you get is a good one, check the eggplants. The dark color of the peel should not smudge on the peeled parts and the meat should not look too dark or dry.
Lahmacun— A pizza like dish with a topping of finely minced meat and onions with spices on flaky thin dough. It is served with tomatoes, lettuce, parsley or rocket and most people prefer to squeeze lemon on it and roll to eat easier like tacos. It originates from the early Syrian cuisine of the Levant and the name comes from Arabic “dough with meat”. It has been a popular fast food like dish in Turkey.
Kurufasulye— Beans, Turks just love it. It can be cooked with or without meat or even with dried spiced thin slices of beef called pastırma. Served with sadepilav (plain rice) and turşu (pickles and sauerkraut). The restaurants across Süleymaniye Mosque are the masters of this dish.
Pilav — There is a great variety of pilaf in the Turkish cuisine, yet the easiest one to make is the most favorite and available one: sadepilav. It is plain rice cooked in water with butter/vegetable oil and noodle like small pasta pieces – şehriye. Varieties are rice cooked with eggplants, chickpeas, meat or liver slices; and of course spices like cinnamon, pepper, thyme, cumin and even almonds.
Bulgur Pilavı – this side dish looks like rice but is actually wheat. The most common type is cooked with roasted onions, green peppers, tomato paste and mint. One of my favorites.
Fried vegetables — Fried eggplants, green peppers, and zucchini with tomato sauce or yogurt are one of the best treats. According to your liking garlic is always welcomed with the sauce or in the yogurt.
Mücver— The main ingredients of this popular Turkish dish are shredded zucchini, eggs and flour. A very common cooking preference adds white cheese, green onions and mint. It is lightly fried in vegetable or olive oil, and served hot as a side dish.
Cacık— A very refreshing mixture of grinded or shredded cucumbers with diluted yogurt, garlic and mint. On a hot summers day some serve it with some ice cubes in it, to make it even more refreshing.
1.Get a visa for Turkey (easy even with an Indian passport) : Turkey now offers e-visa for Indian citizens who hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa – and it takes only 15 minutes to get it. Apply for your Turkey e-visa.
2. A Little Effort Goes a Long Way
Turkish people are very friendly and if you think it would be a rewarding experience to get invited into a family home for Turkish coffee or tea, then learn a little of their langauge.
But watch out for the men who take advantage of that friendly nature. Find out why "Hello, my friend!" is not always what you want to hear.
3. Carry Cash, in Different Currencies
The easiest currencies to convert into Turkish Lira are US dollars and Euro and change offices offer the best rates. There are also ATM machines throughout Turkey, however don't solely rely on your ATM card as your main source of cash in the event that you cannot find a machine that will accept your card. Always have a mixture of cash (in small denominations), an ATM card and major credit cards. Traveler's checks are not advisable as most stores won't accept them and banks and post offices with very long wait times are the only places to cash them.

4. Cover Up
Turkey's location, in both Europe and Asia, has created a fusion where east meets west and while cities can be quite cosmopolitan, the rural communities retain their old customs and traditions. Wherever you chose to travel to in Turkey, you should be aware of the proper dress etiquette. If you are a woman travelling outside of tourist areas then you should you learn how to dress to avoid unwanted attention.

5. Traditional Turkish Toilets Abound
While many Turkish hotels, museums, restaurants, etc have western toilets, you‘ll definitely encounter a few squats as well. Beginners may feel challenged initially but soon enough will become accustomed and might even start to enjoy them. We recommend removing objects and wallets from your pockets in advance. There is generally a tap with running water located next to the squat which you can use to flush. Also always carry toilet paper and small coins with you as most public toilets (and the paper in them) are not free. Antiseptic wipes are also highly recommended.
6. Be wary of where you eat meat.
This should be a given in any foreign country. Don’t eat any meats being sold at the street vendors. Make sure to stick to restaurants and cafes or ask your hotel staff for information on where to eat.
Pack shirts and tops that you can layer. And bring a winter coat if you are traveling during the colder seasons.
It became hot during the day and incredibly cold at night. And always make sure to check the weather before you go.
8. If you are female, make sure to take a scarf with you to visit mosques.
The mosques require females to cover their hair for religious purposes. I luckily had a scarf with me because it was very cold the day I went. I threw it over my hair and went to look at some of the most beautiful architecture I have ever seen.
9. Do not take the boat tour by your self
If you go to the Blue Mosque or Hagia Sofia, there will be numerous people trying to sell you a boat tour. In retrospect, it looks like a really cool deal because it goes all around Istanbul, but you can’t really see anything and the tour guide doesn’t explain much. Save your money and go buy some tea and hookah!
