Germany recently announced a limit on work permits issued to foreign nationals in 2024. The Federal Foreign Office confirmed a maximum of 25,000 work permits will be available.
Important Distinction: Work Permits vs. Work Visas
It’s important to note the difference between work permits and work visas. Germany clarified there’s no general quota for work visas.
Western Balkans Regulation Offers Opportunity
However, there’s good news for citizens of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. Under the Western Balkans regulation, these countries will have access to Germany’s job market through a separate program.
Addressing Labor Shortages
The program allows 50,000 workers from the Western Balkans to enter Germany annually. This initiative aims to address labor shortages in various sectors.
Overall High Numbers Expected
While a specific quota for total foreign workers isn’t yet available, Germany expects to issue a significant number of work visas in 2024. Agreements like the one with Brazil suggest this will include opportunities for nationals from other countries as well.
