The European Union (EU) proposes a 12% rise in Schengen visa application fees, because of inflation. This measure that was mobilized by the European Commission targets the high prices of visa services.
In the new suggested revision, the basic Schengen visa fee for adults will increase from €80 to €90, and for children, it will reach €45 from €40. Moreover, those nations found to be uncooperative in accepting back their nationals without the required papers in the EU will pay higher visa fees. This will see the Schengen visa fees rise from €120 to €135 and from €160 to €180 for these countries.
In addition, EU envisages that external Schengen visa service providers can charge a higher fee in accordance with the revision. Member states’ visa application collecting service providers may charge up to €45 now, which is €5 more than the previous €40.
Nevertheless, the suggested change retains the same €30 charge for a renewal of a Schengen visa. One should keep in mind that the revisions are irrelevant as far as the countries that have already concluded facilitation agreements are concerned, but their impact may be possible in case the agreements in question talk about the visa fees provided under the legal framework of the Visa Code. The European Union Commission launches a feedback campaign on the planned augmentation of Schengen visa fees until March 01, 2024. The citizens of the EU will be able to voice their views on the fee hike via this policy.
The opinions of the EU citizens will influence the outcome of the visa fee revision process. Another German citizen who provided a comment revealed fears that the price hike would impact the middle class negatively. Although even a little increase in payments may affect less rich persons, like foreigners when they apply for Schengen visas, it has been noted.
To sum up, the Schengen visa fees proposed by the EU are intended to cover costs rising as a result of inflation. However, the Commission’s effort to listen to the voice of citizens demonstrate the need to listen to various parties’ perspective when crafting visas polices that impact individuals what travels to the EU.
