The European Union has announced new, tighter visa-free travel rules for 61 countries visiting the Schengen Area. πβ
Travelers from countries like the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan will now face stricter entry requirements.
The new rules come into effect in 2024 and require travelers to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System). π
ETIAS will be mandatory for visa-exempt travelers before their visit to any of the Schengen countries.
The system is designed to enhance security by screening travelers against security databases.
Applicants will need to fill out an online form and pay a small fee to obtain their ETIAS approval. π³
The ETIAS approval is valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
These changes aim to improve border security and streamline the entry process while still promoting tourism.
Despite the extra step, the ETIAS approval process is quick and should take no more than 10 minutes.
The move shows the EUβs commitment to maintaining safety while keeping its borders open for legitimate travelers! ππ
