In a significant step towards modernizing visa procedures within the Schengen Area, the European Union has revealed the name of its new digital Schengen visa application platform: the EU Visa Application Platform (EU VAP). This tool introduces a radical break from the past, where an in-person visa application process was dominant, towards a streamlined online process.
The changeover period from the traditional application methods to the digital platform is expected to stretch up to seven years. While this period, Member States can either take the EU VAP or continue using the conventional means of issuing visas.
EU VAP will provide a simple and fast way for tourists to apply for Schengen visas online. The platform will be open for any applicant regardless of the country of origin. The system will automatically determine the responsible Member State for further processing. This novel system will save applications temporarily keeping the data security and privacy in compliance with the EU legislation.
One of the main characteristics of digital Schengen visa is its format includes a 2D barcode whose confidence is tested by the issuing Member State’s Country Signing Certificate Authority’s signature. The digital visa will be a picture of the holder’s face and can be printed, thus being a safe and convenient travel document.
Under the new regulations, applicants must visit the embassy only in specific cases, for example, getting Schengen visa for the first time or submitting new travel documents. In addition, eligible third parties representing or acting on behalf of the visa applicant and those legally empowered to do so have been granted the right to present applications on behalf of the applicant thus expanding the coverage.
Amendments to the regulations detail some aspects of the visa application process, such as payment mode, language for visa application forms, and electronic updates to visa applicants on the visa status. Visa charges will be paid through a VAT-linked EU gateway with the money being transferred directly to the competent Member State.
In addition, the EU VAP will be inter-linked with other EU systems like the EES and the ETIAS, to enhance efficiency with regard to both limitations of technology and levels of national system investments. The EU Visa Application Platform is a hallmark in the digitalization of Schengen visa procedures, guaranteeing easier, safer and more efficient visa procedures for travelers and authorities both regionally and across the Schengen Area.
