Planning a European adventure? Get ready for some changes! Two new travel requirements are on the horizon: the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). Don’t worry, though – this blog will break it all down for you.
EES: Keeping Track Electronically
The EES is all about streamlining border crossings and enhancing security. Launching in late 2024, it will electronically record travelers’ information upon entry and exit from the Schengen Area (which includes most European countries). This means no more passport stamps! Instead, facial images and fingerprints will be captured at designated kiosks.
Who Does EES Apply To?
The EES applies to all non-EU nationals entering the Schengen zone for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period), regardless of whether they need a visa or not. So, whether you’re from the US, Canada, or Australia, you’ll likely encounter the EES.
ETIAS: Authorization Before You Go
Coming in mid-2025, ETIAS will be a game-changer for visa-exempt travelers. This new system will require citizens from certain countries (around 60) to obtain travel authorization online before their trip to Europe. Think of it as a pre-screening process for visa-free travel.
Applying for ETIAS
The application process for ETIAS is expected to be straightforward and online-based. You’ll need to provide basic information like passport details, travel plans, and answer some security questions. There won’t be any biometric data collection involved, unlike the EES.
Why These New Requirements?
Both EES and ETIAS aim to improve security and border management in Europe. They will allow authorities to track travelers’ movements more effectively and identify potential risks. Additionally, they aim to streamline the border crossing process for everyone.
