This summer, over 35,500 young Europeans will explore the continent for free. The European Commission’s DiscoverEU scheme offers these travel passes, encouraging youth to experience Europe’s diversity, history, and heritage.
The DiscoverEU initiative is part of the Erasmus+ program, aimed at residents of EU member states and associated countries. Applicants must be 18 years old to qualify. This scheme promotes cultural awareness and connection among young Europeans.
Key points:
- Eligibility: Applicants must be 18 and legal residents of the EU or Erasmus+ associated countries.
- Application Rounds: Held twice a year, in spring and autumn.
- Travel Period: Selected youngsters can travel between July 1, 2024, and September 2025.
- Additional Benefits: Participants receive a European Youth Card, offering discounts on transportation, cultural activities, and more.
The latest application round in April saw over 180,000 applicants, reflecting high interest. The next round of applications will open after summer, continuing the scheme launched in 2018. Since then, about 1.4 million youths have applied, with this year’s round being the most successful since 2021.
DiscoverEU not only fosters travel but also enhances education about Europe’s rich cultural landscape. Commissioner Iliana Ivanova highlighted the scheme’s success, noting the growing enthusiasm among European youth.
