In a significant development for tourism enthusiasts, Bulgaria anticipates a surge in visitor numbers following its partial entry into the Schengen Area. The Bulgarian Minister of Tourism, Zaritsa Dinkova, has unveiled the country’s expectation of heightened tourism activities, particularly with the upcoming partial integration into the Schengen Zone, starting with air and sea borders in March 2024.
As of March 31, 2024, Bulgaria will cease conducting checks on individuals entering from Schengen Member States through air and maritime borders. Minister Dinkova asserts that this accession will not only streamline travel logistics but also eliminate inconveniences faced by travelers upon entering the country.
Minister Dinkova emphasizes the removal of border checks as a catalyst for increased interest among travelers. With reduced waiting times and smoother entry processes, Bulgaria becomes an even more attractive destination for global explorers. Despite not yet being a full Schengen member, Bulgaria witnessed a surge in visitor numbers last year, particularly during the winter months when its famed winter destinations shone. Minister Dinkova reports a remarkable 4.9% increase in visitors in December 2023 compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Surprisingly, the data highlights a substantial 48% growth in the number of Italian tourists, revealing a growing interest from this demographic. Furthermore, third-country visitors, notably Turkish guests, increased by 22% in December 2023. The positive outlook for Bulgaria extends beyond governmental expectations. The European Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (ECTAA) has designated Bulgaria as a “Preferred Destination” for 2024. Collaborating with the Ministry of Tourism of Bulgaria and the Association of Bulgarian Tour Operators and Travel Agents, ECTAA aims to position Bulgaria as a must-visit destination.
ECTAA plans to leverage online information desks to disseminate essential details about Bulgaria’s attractions, unique experiences, and travel logistics. The initiative also involves bolstering the country’s social media presence to showcase its diverse offerings. As Bulgaria takes strides toward becoming a more accessible and attractive destination, 2024 is poised to mark a tourism renaissance, drawing visitors with its seamless entry processes, picturesque landscapes, and unique experiences waiting to be discovered.
