Slovenia has extended border controls with neighboring Croatia and Hungary for another six months. This decision comes amidst ongoing security concerns in the Middle East and Ukraine, according to a recent announcement by the Slovenian Ministry of the Interior.
These temporary border checks were first implemented in October 2023 due to security threats. Slovenia, a member of the Schengen Area which typically allows passport-free travel within member states, expressed concerns about the broader geopolitical situation and potential for heightened risks like terrorism and organized crime.
The decision to extend controls aligns with a similar move by Italy, which borders Slovenia to the west. Both countries have agreed to continue collaborating on border security measures.
What does this mean for travelers?
While the Schengen Area generally allows for passport-free travel, these temporary border controls may involve showing your passport and potentially undergoing additional checks. It’s advisable to factor in potential delays when planning your trip to Slovenia, Croatia, or Hungary, especially near the borders.
When will the controls be lifted?
The current extension is valid for six months, until December 21, 2024. Whether Slovenia will decide to extend them further will depend on the evolving security situation.
