Starting in April 2025, EU citizens will need to pay €11 for travel authorisation to enter the UK. This change follows the UK’s post-Brexit border controls to boost security. Here’s what travellers should know:
- Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): The UK will require EU citizens to apply for an ETA for short visits, such as tourism, business, or family trips. The cost will be €11 per application.
- Simple Application Process: Travellers can apply for the ETA online or via a mobile app. Make sure to apply in advance to avoid delays.
- Who Needs the ETA: All EU citizens and nationals from visa-free countries, like the US, Canada, and Australia, must obtain this authorisation. The UK introduced this policy to align with international standards and improve border security.
- Impact on Travel: The fee may be small, but this change signals the end of visa-free travel that EU citizens once enjoyed before Brexit. Once approved, the ETA will last for two years and will allow multiple entries into the UK.
- Irish Citizens Exempt: Irish citizens won’t need to apply for the ETA, thanks to the Common Travel Area (CTA) agreement between the UK and Ireland, which maintains free movement.
As this new rule takes effect in April 2025, make sure to prepare ahead. Paying for the authorisation early will ensure a smooth entry into the UK.
