Great news for Bulgaria and Romania! The European Commission alongside Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have both confirmed there won’t be any new requirements regarding migrant quotas for these countries to join Schengen by land.
Previous Concerns Addressed
Despite delays due to concerns over irregular migration, Bulgaria and Romania’s full Schengen Area membership won’t involve extra migration quotas.
Commitment to Dublin Regulation
Both nations are committed to upholding the Dublin Regulation. This means they’ll take back asylum seekers under their jurisdiction.
Full Schengen Implementation by March End
Fiorella Boigner, a European Commission press officer, confirmed full application of Schengen rules by March 31st. This includes the Visa Code, allowing both countries to issue multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years.
Existing Visas Remain Valid
Short-term visas issued by Bulgaria and Romania before March 31st will still be valid for their intended purpose within the validity period.
Romania Affirms Adherence
Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoed these statements, emphasizing their fulfillment of all necessary requirements. They actively participated in negotiations on the Pact on Asylum and Migration.
Land Border Accession Still Pending
While Bulgaria and Romania will join Schengen by air and sea by the end of the month, land border accession is still under evaluation.
