New Travel Authorization for Europe: What Carriers and Travelers Need to Know

16 March 2024 · Europe Permit

Heads up, travelers and air/sea carriers! A new travel authorization system called ETIAS is coming to Europe in mid-2025. Here’s the breakdown:

For Travelers:

  • Who Needs It? Anyone currently allowed visa-free entry to the EU will need ETIAS approval.
  • Application Process: It’s quick, online, and costs €7. Valid for three years or until your passport expires.
  • Verification: Your ETIAS will be electronically verified by carriers (air/sea) within 48 hours of departure.

For Carriers (Air/Sea):

  • Verification Duty: You’ll be responsible for checking travelers’ ETIAS within 48 hours before departure.
  • Compliance Timeline: Start verifying ETIAS by mid-2025.
  • Verification Tool: A new electronic carrier interface provided by the EU.
  • Non-Compliance Penalty: EU members will determine penalties for non-compliance.

Important Notes:

  • Coach companies have a 3-year grace period to comply with verification.
  • Train operators are not responsible for verification; border guards will handle it.
  • Regardless of travel mode, all ETIAS checks will happen at EU borders.

Overall: ETIAS is designed to streamline travel and enhance security. Stay informed as the launch date approaches!
