Romania and Bulgaria to Boost EU Mobility with Schengen Land Border Integration

On January 1, 2025, Romania and Bulgaria are set to make history by officially joining the Schengen Area through their land borders.  Below are the key highlights:

    • Romania and Bulgaria will enter the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025, marking the end of years of waiting and meeting Schengen accession requirements.

    • Their accession will initially apply to land borders, allowing free movement for road and rail transport between Schengen countries. Airport inclusion will follow in a subsequent phase.
