Bulgaria is an EU member with a growing demand for foreign labour in construction, manufacturing, logistics and agriculture. For Indian workers, the route runs through the employer-led work-permit system — and the document file is where most files are won or lost.
This guide covers the embassy checklist for the main visa routes from India, with the honest notes that too few advisors give you.
The three main routes from India
- Work permit / work visa (Long Stay D) — the employer applies for the work permit first; once approved, the worker applies for the D visa. The permit anchors the whole file.
- Business visa (C) — for short business stays; a different checklist and purpose, not a work route.
- Family reunion (D) — for family members of workers already legally in Bulgaria; requires proof of the family relationship and the sponsor's status.
Know which route applies before assembling documents — mixing checklists is a common cause of delay.
The document checklist
While the exact list must be confirmed at application time, the standard file includes:
- Passport — valid well beyond the intended stay, with at least 2 blank pages.
- Completed visa application form — accurate and signed; minor inconsistencies cause avoidable delays.
- Passport photographs — the number and size in the current checklist.
- Work permit reference / approval — the employer-side approval anchoring a work visa file.
- Employment contract or job offer — tied to the specific employer and role.
- Police clearance certificate (PCC) — with a valid window; an expired PCC is a leading stall reason.
- Medical fitness certificate — current and complete; incomplete medicals are a common delay.
- Bank statements — typically the last 3–6 months.
- Accommodation proof — where the checklist asks for it.
- Family documents — for family reunion: marriage certificate, birth certificates, sponsor status proof.
Why files stall
The same causes appear across corridors:
- An expired or dated PCC — check the validity window before submission, not after.
- An incomplete medical certificate — missing stamps, old reports, or unrecognised clinics.
- Bank statements that do not cover the requested period.
- Inconsistent names and details — one letter of difference between passport, contract and forms can stall a file.
The honest notes
- No agency can guarantee a visa. Permits and visas are decided by the authorities, not by recruiters.
- Service-charge cap for Indian workers: ₹30,000 + GST (Rule 25 of the Emigration Rules), payable by digital payment against a receipt — never cash. Visa fees, medicals and travel are employer-borne costs.
- Never pay before a written offer — genuine processes work off verified employer demand.
- Licensed channels only: MEA-registered recruiting agents on the Indian side (verify on emigrate.gov.in); DoFE-licensed agencies only for Nepal.
The bottom line
Bulgaria's demand for blue-collar labour is real, and the employer-led route is straightforward when the file is right. Candidates who prepare properly — verified demand, complete files, licensed partners — are positioned when openings run.
