"ECR" stands for Emigration Check Required — a category that applies to certain Indian passports. For ECR-passport holders travelling to notified ECR countries, legal deployment requires emigration clearance from the Protector of Emigrants, processed through the government's eMigrate system.
This clearance sits alongside the other protections every legal deployment includes: a written employment contract signed by the foreign employer, a proper work visa (never a tourist visa for a job), and Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana (PBBY) insurance.
